BlogHer 2008 : San Francisco
What other conference could you go to where an attendee stands up and says, “Um, I know Nintendo is here, and I’d just like to say, ‘I’d like a Wii?’”
Alicia here, checking in from the fourth annual BlogHer conference in San Francisco. There’s a busy schedule here today, tonight and tomorrow, so stay tuned for notes, photos and more.

The end of BlogHer Business
Another good year for BlogHer Business. If you haven’t been before and like digital PR, have no clue what digital PR is or your boss told you your company needs to get it, BHB talks to all of those. I was pleased to see this year deal more with Twitter and mobile. Unlike the summer BlogHer conference (now conferences!), BHB is usually geared toward more “industry folks.” I was...
Improving the pitch
Mir from Woulda Coulda Shoulda is part of a panel on improving pitches to bloggers from PR people. She’s telling some great horror stories right now about the pitches she’s received. Some of the things she’s seen in e-mail pitches: Wrong names Being addressed as her blog name Forwarding carrots still left in the e-mail (since it’s clearly been copied and pasted to make it...

BlogHer Day 2
Good morning! I’m back here for Day 2 of BlogHer Business. We’re having some Internet connectivity issues this morning, so hopefully I’ll still be able to update the masses. Right now we’re in the middle of breakout sessions. The panel is discussing how to find the right digital fix for your digital need.
Method and bloggers
Talk about a challenge for Method. What do you do when you don’t have budget for traditional promotion, have a brand that most people think is for Target, but all the while want to let the world know how they can be greener? Turn to bloggers. They’ve been hosting blogger parties for them to try out the products. Nice.
Defining your audience
HP: By selecting a narrow audience that wants to hear about your product, you’ll have much more success than trying to target 6 million+ on the Internet.
Just because you can reach out to bloggers doesn’t mean you should.

Case study: Graco's Lindsey Lebresco
The theme of today is definitely “building relationships,” and Graco is a good example of that. They partnered with the Silicon mom blogger network to start a relationships and place product and info. From their events they did with the network, they’ve moved from being that “fly on the wall” to being someone who knows exactly what’s going on with their...
GM case study
Guess who’s up on stage… It’s Michigan’s own (and one our clients) Natalie Johnson! She’s up on stage chatting about GM’s participation with the Manic Mommies last fall. Since I work with GM on a daily basis, I’m very aware of the work they’ve doing to build and maintain relationships across the blogosphere. But it’s always so interesting when...
Thoughts so far
We’re just finishing up lunch here in NYC. So far BlogHer Business has been really interesting. A lot of good info to get us all thinking when we get back to the office.
Responding to commenters
Kodak- Tries to respond immediately to comments on its blogs. They don’t respond to all of them, just the ones that warrant it. Interesting problem- Lots of Kodak groups on Flickr, but because it is technically a competitor, Kodak can’t do a lot with that user-generated content.
Why should we go mobile?
Hearst: “I had no idea my phone could do that!” “We wanted to be wherever she is. We wanted to be helpful when she was on the go.” Good Housekeeping and Redbook have huge online followings. Really easy for them to monitor mobile. Whatever is popular, they highlight and send it out. “Put pressure on your blogging software provider to make a mobile brand.” How...
DC Goodwill Fashion Blog
What a cool site! The DC Fashionista highlights cool stuff inside the DC location, while educating readers about vintage fashion. On Tuesdays they post an item from the store on eBay that will be a hit with readers. Great way to promote your organization.

Survey results
Digital natives: Individuals who’ve grown up with more technology in their life. Digital immigrants: Those who are new to the field. These two, no surprise, are defined by their age groups, with Gen X being the first and Boomers being the second. I wonder… will that idea change for Boomers as they become more familiar with the medium?
What is a widget?
One thing I’m hoping someone will define today… what a widget is. I think the general masses think it’s one thing when it’s really another.
What does your audience want from the widget you’re trying to give them?

Opening keynote: Where to find conversations
New paradigm: “user-generated publishing.” Users look to other users and now consider each other experts. I like this concept. Just the other day we were discussing with others the idea that bloggers must be treated like traditional journalists, and this concept backs it up. As bloggers continue to produce more and more quality content, that idea that they’re not experts should...
